In a strongly worded statement, North Korea denounced what it claims was a “serious violation of sovereignty” after shooting down a drone which it said came from South Korea. The country, meanwhile, reiterated its firm support for Russia in its conflict with Ukraine and the West.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong-un told Russian President Vladimir Putin, “I will unconditionally respect and unconditionally support all your policies and decisions, and I am always ready to stand with you and your Russia. This choice is immutable and eternal.” He expressed his intention to continuously strengthen the strategic partnership.
General Staff of the Korean People’s Army Condemns South Korean Drone “Provocation” (January 10)
The spokesperson of the General Staff issued a statement strongly condemning the alleged intrusion of South Korean drones into North Korean airspace.“South Korea is our most hostile enemy that cannot change, and if it dares to provoke us, it will inevitably be destroyed,” it said. North Korea defined what it says have been repeated drone incursions as a “grave violation of sovereignty” and warned the South Korean authorities that “the reckless acts of South Korean warmongers, which can never be tolerated, will surely be made to pay the price.”
Kim Yo-jong Criticizes South Korean Defense Ministry’s Explanation (January 11)
Kim Yo-jong, sister of the North Korean leader and Deputy Director of the Publicity and Information Department of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, issued a statement criticizing the South Korean Defense Ministry for suggesting that the recent drone shot down by the North may have been launched by a civilian group. “The undeniable fact is that a drone originating from South Korea violated our national airspace,” she said. “Even if it were the act of a civilian group or an individual, the authorities, as the entity responsible for national security, cannot escape responsibility.”
UN Ambassador Kim Song Denounces the U.S. and the West (January 13)
Kim Song, North Korea’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has criticized a United Nations Security Council meeting on Russia’s recent air strike on Ukraine, claiming that the war was “entirely created by the confrontational policies of the United States and the West.” With NATO expanding eastward and “infringing upon Russia’s legitimate and reasonable security interests,” Russia had a “right to self-defense,” Kim said. “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s position of fully supporting and endorsing the just cause of the Russian Federation is consistent and immutable.”
