Man killed in accident in Sariwon during rice harvesting

A man who had been mobilized for rice harvesting in Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province, reportedly died after falling from a moving vehicle.
The accident happened on October 6th and involved a man in his 40s who had completed a full day of harvesting duty. “He had finished his work and was on his way home when he tried to ride a moving vehicle and fell,” a source in the province told NK Times on October 20.
According to the source, buses in Sariwon primarily run for profit, and intercity buses are limited. For these reasons, some people, particularly able-bodied men, often try to avoid the fare by jumping on board moving vehicles.
The victim of this accident was reportedly returning home from rural mobilization in this manner when the tragedy occurred. “Accidents like this happen every year,” the source said.
“There need to be measures in place to ensure safe transportation so that people don’t have to rely on informal or risky methods. Without such policies, fatal accidents will continue to occur.”
