Food warehouse robbed on military base… Inside job suspected

A recent case of theft at a military warehouse has prompted investigators to suspect the military was itself involved.
According to sources contacted in North Korea, thieves broke into a food storage facility at an anti-aircraft artillery battalion under the 91st Capital Defense Corps in Sangwon county, in North Hwanghae Province, southeast of Pyongyang, in the early hours of July 27.
As the incident took place on the anniversary of the Korean War armistice, which North Korea celebrates as its Day of Victory over the United States, the unit was immediately placed on high alert, sources said.
Although the perpetrator has yet to be identified, the Ministry of State Security is reportedly conducting an investigation under the assumption that it was an inside job.
“Military bases are under strict surveillance,” one source said. “Especially since ordinary civilians face severe beatings if caught attacking military units, it is highly unlikely that residents would dare do anything like this. That is why investigators are focusing on personnel on guard duty at the time.”
“The State Security Department of the military unit in question is currently narrowing down suspects by checking the movements of all soldiers stationed there on the day of the incident,” he said, adding, “It appears likely the culprit will be identified before long.”
